Since 1990 the plastics industry has been searching for ways to eliminate the use of environmentally hazardous substances from foam manufacturing processes. The use of carbon dioxide as a blowing agent then began to appear interesting. As carbon dioxide is produced by recovery, it does not affect the environment and is an ideal solution for replacing CFC and similar substances in foaming. In a carbon dioxide-based foaming process, all chemical components and additives, including the carbon dioxide, are mixed under sufficient pressure to keep the carbon dioxide fully dissolved in the liquid reactants.
